The whole project started when we decided to remove an old stump in our back yard. I thought a flagstone patio would look fantastic! How hard could it be to build one? After doing some research online I put together a plan….sort of. All the info I found on how to build a flagstone patio claimed it was so easy! Build it in one day they said! Well I am here to tell you it was not easy and it took a lot longer than one day! Mostly due to the fact that our backyard is far from level and that my husband and I are NOT Landscape designers. Give me a room to design any day but the back yard is a whole other story. But I was determined and looked forward to sitting in my back yard in the evening on my new flagstone patio. This is how we did it. Step 1 – Outline the patio. I drew a large circle with spray paint and once I was 1/2 way through digging it out I decided the circle was too big, and I was exhausted from digging so I condensed it to a smaller circle which actually worked out perfect. Step 2 – Landscaping cloth and gravel. After digging the whole, we put down landscape cloth and then gravel on top. This is where we leveled everything out to the best of our ability. We also used dirt from the hole to try to level the yard out around the patio. Step 3 – Sand and stone. We covered the layer of gravel with about a 2 inch layer of sand and hand tampered it all, then the fun part…..laying down the stone. It was like putting together a giant puzzle. We used granite stone bricks as a border which I think pulls it all together. Step 4 – Filling it all in. We mixed sand and dry cement and filled in between all the stones then watered it and it hardened over night. Next we used mortar to keep the border stones in place and and fill in the gaps. (you can see the mortar where we filled it in but overall it has a lovely rustic feel to it) Viola! My Flagstone Patio. I love it and I know we will get lots of use out of it this summer and into the fall. Here is a picture with our outdoor cooker.
I look forward to many days and nights enjoying our new patio.
