I had a mini panic the other day when I realized I have my painters starting next week and I haven’t chosen paint colours yet for our house. So off I went to gather hardwood flooring, wall/floor tiles and countertop samples that I have chosen for the new place. I had some ideas of what colours I wanted but when it all spread across my dining room table and I could see everything in one place that is when it all came together.
When I put together designs I like to use neutrals for permanent finishings and neutral furniture and add colour with accessories like pillows, towels, rugs, artwork etc. Neutral finishes are timeless and you won’t get tired of them. 🙂
I have my fan decks and can usually pick colours from there but I always recommend using the bigger samples. You can get them from Sherwin Williams paint stores and Benjamin Moore will sell you sample pots and large sheets of card stock to make your own.
Can you see a theme here…neutral light gray! We will have a large open concept kitchen, dining, living space so I want my walls to be fairly light. I have a whole house to choose for as well as a basement suite so I want to keep things simple and the paint colours to flow. I know they all look similar but each is slightly different.
I am also shopping for a new couch so put in a few samples as well to see how they go with the rest of the finishes. I’m not sold on either of these colours.
I designed the basement suite with the same neutrals so I didn’t have to choose a ton of paint colours. In the end I have one colour for the main open area upstairs, one colour for all the bedrooms (suite included), one colour for all the bathrooms (suite included) one colour for the basement which is the same as the suite main living area. Keeping things light and neutral will create a nice flow throughout the house.
Here are my paint colours:
Benjamin Moore Horizon – OC-53 – Upper floor – entryway, hallway, great room/kitchen, stairwell, linen closet
Benjamin Moore Moonshine – OC-56 – Upper floor – all three bedrooms and closets and Lower floor – basement suite bedroom
Benjamin Moore Classic Gray – OC-23 – Lower floor – great room, laundry room, basement suite
Sherwin Williams – On The Rocks – SW 7671 – All bathrooms/powder room
Benjamin Moore Oxford White CC-30 – All ceilings, doors and trim
We are at the point in our renovation when things all start to come together and I’m excited to see the finishes 🙂
