How does one decide on the right white when Benjamin Moore has over a 100 of them? With so many to choose from it can be a little overwhelming to pick one that is just right. Finding the perfect white for your kitchen or bathroom cabinets, your furniture project, the trim in your home or for your walls, all starts with the undertones. There are cool blue whites, warm yellow whites, purple whites, green whites etc. Here are my Top 4 Whites from Benjamin Moore. CC-50 White Down – This is such a beautiful warm creamy white. It’s the perfect white to add a bit of warmth to a room if used on the walls.
It looks great on cabinets and is the perfect trim colour for darker coloured walls.
CC – 65 Chantilly Lace – this is a true white. If you compare any other white to this one you will see the undertones in the other whites. I use it the most out of all the whites. You can’t go wrong with this white and It’s the perfect trim colour.
Chantilly Lace is also a great choice for cabinets and it works well with Carrera Marble.
I painted this corner cabinet in Chantilly Lace. LOVE it!
CC – 40 Cloud White – this is probably the most used white in all of Benjamin Moore whites. It right between white and cream. It looks great with lighter warmer shades like Palladian Blue (Benjamin Moore) So pretty!
Cloud white is perfect for furniture like dressers and night stands because it goes with both cool and warm tones.
It’s a lovely for kitchen cabinets.
It’s perfect for walls since it has a creaminess to it and is not too cool.
AF – 5 Frostine – This white has an icy blue-green undertone which makes it crisp and clean. It’s the perfect white with any cool colour pallet.
Frostine is the trim colour in my entire house and my fireplace mantle and It goes really well with white marble.
Well I hope this helps narrow your choices down a bit. What is your favorite white and why?

hi – what do you think about Decorator’s White for the walls?
Hi Joyce,
Decorators white is nice for walls as it isn’t too stark. It has a bit of a soft creamy undertone so brightens up a room nicely.
Toni
Hi Toni,
Which Benjamin Moore white would you recommend trim be painted when the walls will be white down?
Thank you
Hi There, I would use BM Chantilly Lace. It’s a bright clean white that will complement the White Down.
Thanks for your quick response. Much appreciated.
Hi,
Which white would you recommend for the trim if I use BM Horizon for the walls?
Thank you!
Virginie
Hi Virginie,
I would recommend Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace. The crisp clean white looks great with Horizon. I have the exact combo in my own living room and I love it.
Thanks,
Toni
Just purchased a new home. The floors are brazilian cherry hardwood, walls are currently a pale gray-blue-green. There are lots of windows and natural light.. I am planning on buying new upholstered furniture and feel stuck as to what color upholstery.
Would BM’s Simply White be simply too white for the walls?
thanks
Hi Liz,
Benjamin Moore Simply white would be gorgeous on the walls especially with the flooring then you are open to whatever colour furniture to purchase. it’s not a bright white so won’t make the room look stark.
Toni
Hi Toni,
Our trim is Simply White throughout the house. We had a south facing room painted Simply White on the walls recently. The color looks yellow/super creamy. Is there another white color you recommend with the trim color? White Dove?
Hi Jane,
Try Benjamin Moore’s Cloud White for the trim. It’s a soft warm white.
Thanks,
Toni
Hi Toni thanks for the blog post. Wanted your quick thoughts. Just bought a home with beige ceramic tiles (no movement) set diagonally in the living areas. The kitchen cabinets are white. The walls now are beige and blend in too much. I plan on having some rustic (medium wood tones) mixed with some more contemporary furniture. I know I want the walls white to brighten the space and love chantilly white. I will also have large colorful artwork. However, do you think chantilly white as the wall color throughout the whole living space will be too stark? Simply white I have on my trim now and it looks too yellowy/dull
Hi Michael,
Your home sounds beautiful.
Chantilly white may be too stark, have a look at Benjamin Moore Oxford White.
Thanks,
Toni
I’m painting some kitchen cabinets Chantilly Lace. What kind of finish would you recommend for cabinets? Semi gloss?
Thanks!
Hi Jason,
I like a satin or semi gloss finish for cabinets. Semi gloss being easy to wipe down.
Toni
Hi Toni,
I am seeking a paint color to brighten up my kitchen. I have creamy white cabinets (the exact color of cloud white) and gray granite. Originally I wanted to go with a really light (almost white) pink or purple but the samples I put on my wall look awful now that we have installed new light fixtures with yellow tone halogen bulbs. Any recommendations for paint colors? My front room is done in revere pewter and my great room is in grey cloud (which looks light blue in the lighting). The kitchen opens to both of these rooms. Thanks in advance for your tips!
Jane
Hi Jane,
This is not an easy question to answer without seeing pictures and more detail. I would love to help you out if you want to do an on-line consult we can do so. Here is the link on my website. http://www.tonischeferdesign.com/online-services/
Thanks,

Am looking for the whitest white….not “warm creamy” etc. Titanium like white for my house exterior. Will have dark green shutters and front door.
A brilliant eye aching WHITE…. where is it? What’s it called?
Hi there,
Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly lace is a bright white or for a cooler white try Benjamin Moore’s Decorators White.
Happy painting 🙂
Toni
Would you use chantilly lace on the ceiling and the trim? Or too stark for ceiling? We are going with mostly cool gray walls. Decorator white looks gray to me in our space. Thanks!
Hi Ali,
I have used Chantilly Lace on ceilings and I didn’t find it too stark and I have also used Oxford white on ceilings and it is a slight bit warmer. Both look great.
Thanks,
Toni
Hi Toni,
I like the idea of an all white room mixed with light to medium woods and bright pops of color in the decor. Which wall/trim color would you recommend? I should also note that my sofa is white with a grey undertone.
Thank you!
Hi Kristen,
I like Benjamin Moore Horizon on the walls with Chantilly Lace trim colour. Horizon is really light with a slight blue/gray undertone and looks almost white in some lights and the Chantilly Lace adds a nice crisp white contrast.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Toni
Hi, I am currently updating my kitchen. The cabinets are currently a medium brown Alder wood. We plan to paint them white. Our trim work is all bright white similar to SW extra white. Walls are SW Mindful Gray. Will it be too stark to paint the cabinets the Extra White ? I looked at Pure White and it took on a slight pink cast next to my trim. Small sample of Chatilly looks a little yellow next to my trim. Thought about trying Decorators White . I dont really understand the whole undertone thing and would appreciate any ideas you have. Thanks so much
Hi Mary,
Extra white is very bright and if you want something not as bright try Decorators White. It’s a true white so shouldn’t show any undertones.
Hope this helps 🙂
Toni
Thank you for this review of Benjamin Moore whites. I currently have SW Extra white on all of my trim, crown molding and ceilings of my 850 sf condo. I have SW ice cube on all of the walls. I am looking to paint my kitchen cabinets white a looking to find the paint that would match the trim (it has been strongly encouraged that I do so) Frostine has been recommended as the color that most matches SW Extra white. Would you rec this color for kitchen cabinets? I want to use a BM color. I am also considering BM Chantilly Lace and BM Super White (There is about 1 foot of the SW Ice cube that would be in between the cabinets and crown molding in the kitchen)… Thank you for any advice!
Hi Tanya,
Take a look at BM Chantilly Lace OR BM Distant Gray. Both would work but it all depends on how they look in your space. Paint a larger piece of cardboard with both and compare.
Hope this helps 🙂
Toni
Hi Toni,
I am painting the entire upstairs of my condo in Benjamin Moore’s Gray Owl and I am looking for a sharp/true white to use on the trim that makes this color pop. I really like Chantilly Lace because it appears to be a tad creamier than Decorators White yet remains a true white. Do you like Chantilly Lace with Gray Owl? Thank you so much!
Hi Sherrie,
I don’t find Chantilly Lace creamy at all? It’s my go to white because it has a crisp clean look and yes it looks gorgeous with Gray Owl.
Thanks,
Toni
Hello, i hope you can help me with this. I recently both an old house (1890) in Montreal. It has 11 foot ceiling with original moldings/trims and dark wood floor). I find that the moldings look a bit to yellow (unfortunately i dont know which color they are). I did find old paint gallons and i think OC-9 (Ballet white) might have been used on the wall and/or trim and CC-40 (cloud white) on the ceiling. If i would like the trims/moldings to be less “yellowish” wich color would you recommend? What about the wall? Many thanks
Hi Sophie, the house sounds amazing! I always like Chantilly Lace it’s my go to white and every time I try a different one I go back to it. Try it on the mouldings and ceilings and look at Oxford white (its not as bright) for the walls.
Hope this helps
Toni
Thank you for your review on your favourite whites. I’ve just purchased a double wide manufactured home. I’m working with small rooms and it faces north & south which can be dark at times. The kitchen cupboards are a light oak as well as trim and bathrooms. It’s not an option to paint the oak so I’m looking for a white that will compliment the oak and look crisp and clean. I’ve tried whites in the past and they have looked dirty. Have you any words of wisdom to make my little place come alive?
Hi Karen,
If there isn’t enough light most whites can look dirty. I would try Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace or Decorators White as they are clean whites without yellow undertones.
Hope this helps.
Toni
Hello – thank you for such a great post! I am having SUCH trouble trying to figure out a new kitchen cabinet/wall/trim color due to our open floor plan, The kitchen floor (and rest of house) is Santos Mahogany (similar to Cherry but more slightly more brown-orange than red), and the granite is a moderately dark greenish/blueish with some rich brown veins and a little gray too (think of Planet Earth from afar). Backsplash is a 2 inch stone tile in warm creamy tones. I want to paint the cabinets white/off-white or even a soft neutral color. White Dove looks too dingy (not a ton of light in the room); Mascarpone may be slightly too yellow? Cloud White is pretty, but would it be too white with the granite and floors? We have a LOT of cabinets! I do like Cloud White in other parts of the house (trim) and its very close to the color of a large built-in TV cabinet/bookshelf which butts up to our kitchen. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Happy New Year!
Hi Julie,
Cloud white would be a great choice. It’s a creamy white but not too yellow so would not look to stark in the kitchen and will blend nicely with the countertop and backsplash.
Happy New Year!
Toni
Just wanted to say THANK YOU! I am in love with all the Cloud White in my kitchen. It is PERFECT :-))
Toni,
Just had my large kitchen professionally painted with SW Highly reflective white, did not like, blue tone. I am looking for a bright white with no tone, pure white, not creamy, the LRV on BM Chantilly Lace is 90, will this color be a stark white, which is what I am looking for. The painting company is willing to paint another coat over the SW Highly reflective. Appreciate your help. I intend on purchasing some sample cans. Thanks, Gina
Hi Gina,
Chantilly lace will be your best white it’s a true white with no blue or yellow.
Hope this helps.
Toni
Totally agree with Toni. I just painted my kitchen cabinets with Chantilly Lace and I love them. No blue or pink – just nice white-white! Mary Ann
Very informative !! I’m painting the inside of my house bm classic grey and am going with chantilly lace for ceiling, trim and doors.is that a good choice ? Also I’m painting the exterior siding of my house white. Is chantilly lace a good color for exterior walls? What would you recommend for window trim in that case ? The roof is a light grey shingle . Thanks in advance !
Hi Sam,
I love Chantilly Lace it’s my go to white as it has no yellow or blue undertones. It would be nice as an exterior colour also and I would suggest either black or a colour like Chelsea Gray for window trim.
Happy painting!
Toni
Hi, my condo is facing southeast and getting to paint it in Chantilly Lace on my walls. Do you think it will be stark. I want to paint my walls white, do u think it will work..? or any other white I you recommend. Thanks !
Hi Tan,
I like Chantilly Lace because it’s a true white so no it won’t look too stark. Another colour you can look at is Benjamin Moore Oxford White. It’s a but warmer but still I nice white.
Hope this helps.
Toni
Thanks for the quick response, really appreciate it :). Painting a house is really tough i must say, so thanks a lot for all the help, it gives me better idea..
I don’t like white which has a yellow undertone to it. Any idea if Chantilly lace has any undertone? Also should i go with matte or eggshell finish ? My living room have a lot natural light. Thanks again
Chantilly lace does not have any yellow so you should be fine. And yes go with eggshell .
Hello… I’m struggling! I have a MCM home that gets lots of morning light. The sun sets to the southwest of the home. I’m struggling with an interior white color choice as I want to paint walls, trim, doors, etc all one color white. It’s situated in the mountains outside of Santa Cruz, CA – beautiful backdrop where the “art” is outside. 🙂
I’ve painted patches of Decorator White, Simply White, Super White, and Swiss Coffee on the walls. Decorator is too gray for me, Super is calling me but I’m thinking it may be too bright. Simply is too yellow and Swiss Coffee is too similar to the current color.
Can you point me to something between Decorator and Super? Maybe Frostine is that color?
Being color blind doesn’t help either.
Hi Jeff,
Chantilly Lace is a true white and won’t go blue or yellow and it’s not too stark. Give it a try.
Hope this helps.
Toni
Hi Toni!
I’m moving into a new house and we’d really love to paint out the whole home in white.
Is there a benjamin moore white you would recommend for an all-purpose true white that won’t look to dingy in some rooms? I’ve bounced around between so many. Our floors have a reddish undertone and our kitchen cabinets are a high-gloss modern white.
Also wondering on how you feel about painting out the trim and walls in the same colour, or if we should include a different white for the trim/doors.
Thank you!
Hi Rebecca,
I love my go to Chantilly Lace for an all over white and yes paint the trim and walls the same colour OR paint them in a really light gray like Horizon. That would be really pretty.
Hope this helps.
Toni
Hi Toni,
You have helped me decide on Chantilly White for my kitchen cabinets! My question now is what color to paint the ceiling? My cabinets go all the way to the ceiling so I am not sure if I should use Chantilly White or another color of white. The kitchen ceiling is contiguous with the family room ceiling so I want to choose a color that is not too “stark” and yet still goes with the cabinets! My home is small!
Thank you so much,
Kara
Hi Kara,
So happy I was able to help you with your cabinet color. I would recommend using Chantilly Lace for the ceiling as well. If you go a different white it won’t look consistent and the ceiling will look dirty.
Good luck.
Toni
Hi Toni,
Thank you for your fast reply! My conundrum is that my house is small and one room leads to another so once you start in with the ceiling, you have to keep going! My family room couches are dark olive and I’m not sure I want to go that white on the ceiling. I have yet to decide on a wall color, but looking for a blue to maybe carry into the kitchen. Could this be pulled off? Small California house with classic “L” shape.
Hi Kara, If your house is small and it all blends together then keep the ceiling colour the same and I would suggest Chantilly Lace. It is not stark at all and a nice pretty white that will go with any wall colour your choose. You can never go wrong with blue and white either.
Toni
Hi Toni,
I chose Chantilly Lace for the exterior color of the house and want the trim white also, I have black shutters and doors. Would Super White in semi gloss work for trim?
Hi Lynne,
Why do you want a different white do you want the trim to have a bit of a contrast? If so then yes you can use Super White but I would recommend using Chantilly Lace for the trim as well.
Hope this helps.
Toni
Hello Toni,
Thank you for all your advice! I so nervous to commit to a white for my kitchen! I’m thinking of Chantilly Lace for all my kitchen cabinets with White Water for the island. I’m also thinking of using Chantilly Lace for all the ceilings, doors, trim and wall panelling toughout the whole house. It is a large home. I’m sacred it will be too stark. What are your thoughts? I appreciate your time and advice. Thank you inadvance.
Hi Christina,
Chantilly lace is not a stark white and I like the idea of using it throughout. Don’t mix different whites it will look inconsistant and patchy.
Hope this helps
Toni
Hi Toni,
As I mentioned earlier, I am painting my kitchen cabinets Chantilly Lace. I love it and it is white! I am in my 50’s and come from the days when Navajo White was the standard “white” in houses. Now I notice houses are painted colors like Chantilly Lace throughout. It’s much brighter and much more fresh looking. What whites are “stark” by today’s standards? And what is the difference between white and stark?!
Thank you,
Kara
Hi Kara,
Whites that have a blue undertone look stark as they are very cool. I find Benjamin Moore’s Decorators White to be more stark. Chantilly lace does not have a blue or yellow undertone so it is a true white which makes it crisp and clean.
Hope this helps,
Toni
Hi – I’m repainting an entire home that is being remodeling. 10ft ceilings with white cabinets (not custom, and not sure of exact color, but they are not off white, more of a bright white). Cabinets go to the ceiling and I’ve just installed a tongue and groove over the entire ceiling including the kitchen, family room and entry hall way. Additionally, I’m adding wall paneling, wainscot style that will go all the way up the wall to the ceiling in many of these same locations. Home is south facing. What color would your recommend for:
– the T&G ceiling
– the wall panels which will have crown and base
– the other walls in this same space without the paneling
– the other trim (baseboards, casing)
– doors
Thanks and I love your website 🙂

Hi
I’m looking at chantilly lace , decorators white and distant gray for my home which has lot many areas to paint white.
I have read your comments above and see you are a big fan of chantilly lace 🙂
What would you say the difference is between those three?
In my walls chantilly is the brightest , distant gray is one step down ( I don’t want to see gray though :))
No one recommends distant gray in their white blogs and I don’t like the name gray in it !!
And decorators almost disappears into the drywall color which isn’t bad but little dingier?
It is a more modern yet classic home but with details not minimalistic looking
Can you tell me your thoughts on these three whites?
I was thinking for the white rooms
All one white on trim and wall and ceiling in different finishes ?
Ty so much !!!!
P.
Hi Pearl,
I like Chantilly Lace as it’s a true white with no yellow or blue undertone. The other two whites you are talking about can look dirty. Another nice white is Benjamin Moore Snow White. I like to paint filings in a matte paint on the ceiling, eggshell on walls and semi-gloss on trim.
Hope this helps.
Toni
Hi. I am painting my cabinets chantilly lace advance in a satin finish. I am also using it for trims, doors and moulding. Can I use chantilly lace for the ceiling? If yes, can I use the same finish or does it have to be a flat finish. Thanks! Pamela
Hi Pamela,
Yes you can use it for the ceiling but you should do a flat finish.
Hope this helps.
Toni
Hi Toni,
I really appreciate your advice and blog.
I have been in my house for 22 years and can now finally do a kitchen ‘refresh’. I am very excited. I am painting maple cabinets and replacing countertop ( to Cambria Mongomery-lots of Aqua/blue tones ) Kitchen gets lots of natural light.
Am seriously considering Chantilly Lace or Pure white from SW. No undertones wanted. Any opinions on either one of them for kitchen cabs? Thank you so much!
Hi Elizabeth,
I always go back to Chantilly Lace. I find it’s a true white with no undertones and any of the SW whites always change on me so I stay away.
Hope this helps.
Toni
Hi we are looking to paint our kitchen cabinets white. Our wall colour is stonington gray, with medium brown oak hardwood and white quartz counters with grey/black specks, everything is visible throughout the breakfast bar /kitchen area. We are considering the Chantilly Lace and Decorators white. We want to give the cabinets that modern fresh look to complement the stainless steel appliances. Which white would be best would the Chantilly be too stark or the Decorators be too grey/muted?
Thank you in advance
Hi Derrick,
It all depends on the countertop you choose. Quartz always looks a little gray muted white so I would suggest Chantilly Lace. It’s not too stark at all and will look nice with the Stonington gray walls.
Thanks,
Toni
Hi Toni
Your site and comment section are both very informative and I thank you for sharing all your expertise.
I am also in a ‘white’ quandry with Cloud White cabinets, doors and trim and am hoping to find a complimentary/similar white for my walls.
I did paint the walls Cloud White as well but for some reason the walls took on a serious green undertone so I am on the hunt. I have sampled Simply White and it does not turn green but I am afraid it will be too bright against the trim and cabinets etc.
Any direction you could provide me with would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much.
Sincerely
Brenda
Hi Brenda,
Simply white will not look to bright and would be a good choice with Cloud White cabinets.
Toni
Thank you so much- you are a DOLL!😊
Hey Toni,
I’m just building a new modern open foor plan house. I’m looking to paint all the doors in either BM black beauty, BM Onyx or BM Nightfall. I would like to do BM Distant Gray Eggshell for the walls. Now for the trim and ceilings I’m either looking at BM Chantilly lace or BM Decorators White, Which do you recommend? I was going to do the trim in a satin finish and ceiling flat white. Also which of the 3 door colors do you recommend? Would it be okay to finish the doors in matte? Floors are a natural white oak throughout, kitchen cabinets high gloss white and matte black.
Thank you for your advice.
Cheers,
Paul
Hi Paul,
I like BM Onyx as a black as it doesn’t have any brown in it. I love BM Chantilly Lace as it’s my go to white 99% of the time. Yes you can finish the doors in matte. Sounds like a lovely design and I would love to see some pictures when your done.
Thanks,
Toni
Hi,
I am using Chantilly Lace for kitchen cabinets, trim, ceilings etc.
I am would like to go with white walls but I don’t want to use Chantilly Lace and I am afraid if I go with cloud cover oc-25 it will look dirty.
Any suggestions for a wall color?
The countertops will be a marble called Medusa and the floors are wood.
Thanks!
Gerry
Hi Gerry,
Have a look at Benjamin Moore Snow White. It will look nice with Chantilly Lace.
Good luck,
Toni
What is the paint color used on the wall in the picture where you say cloud white is great for furniture (ie the dresser in the photo)?
Thanks
Hi Erin,
I’m not 100% sure but here is the link to where you can find out.http://www.amdolcevita.com/2013/06/knobs-for-french-provincial-dresser.html. If I was to guess or think of a similar colour I would suggest looking at Sherwin Williams Reflection.
Hope this helps.
Toni
Hi Toni,
I’m having my cabinets painted white and was looking closely at Oxford White. It seems to be a bit warmer than Chantilly Lace. Have you tried Oxford on cabinets? Wondering if it has a tendency to show any undertone. Love your website!
Hi John,
Oxford White is nice on cabinets and yes a bit warmer with out looking too cream and without any yellow undertones.
Good luck!
Toni
Hello Toni I am redoing entire north facing living room with little light. Would love to paint the entire room one color. The rest of the house has all the trim painted in Chantilly lace which I love because I am a fan of crisp white. The living room has French doors separating it from the rest of the house. I am getting new built ins and want to paint a dark colored fireplace mantle. The furniture yet to arrive will be in neutral colors not a fan of creamy whites but feel it needs it to be cozy. I would love a white not too creamy but still cozy thank you so much you give awesome advice
Take Care Ann
Hi Ann,
Have a look at Benjamin Moore Oxford White. It’s a nice white that is not too creamy but warmer than Chantilly Lace.
Good luck!
Toni
Hi Toni,
My kitchen cabinets are chantilly lace and I’m thinking of painting the ceiling and trim in chantilly lace mat but not sure what white colour to do the walls. Please help.
Hi Niki,
You can do the walls Chantilly Lace as well or try BM Snow White.
Happy Painting.
Toni
Hi Toni,
Looking to paint our Mediterranean style home exterior in a white with a true dark chocolate (Santa Barbara style) considering Chantilly Lace but would love a suggestion of a dark chocolate that you think would work well with it?
Thank you so much!
Best regards,
Quinn
Hi Quinn,
Have a look at BM Bittersweet Chocolate or Sherwin Williams Ubane Bronze.
Good Luck.
Toni
I am redoing my kitchen and will have a farmhouse sink in white. I will be getting new white shaker cabinets. Any suggestions as to which white to use as I don’t want it to look like I tried to match it with the sink. I have cloud white wainscotting in the hallway that joins up to the kitchen and I would like to do the kitchen cabinets in the same colour. I’m just concerned that the sink might look out of place as it will be a brighter white than the cabinets. Should I go a darker shade of white to have more contrast with the sink? Any suggestions for a better shade of white. I have revere pewter on the walls and all the trim is cloud white. Thanks!
Hi Sandra,
I would do the cabinets in the Cloud White to match the wainscoting. The sink is porcelain so it’s a different material and will look fine if it’s a bit different white.
Good luck with your kitchen update.
Toni
Toni – do you ever find Chantilly Lace to be too stark in homes that are more traditional/transitional in style? I love the clean white but lean more traditional in my style. Also can one still do cream accents in a room with true whites?
Hi There,
No, I use Chantilly lace in traditional homes as well as modern homes. Yes you can do cream accents in a room with true whites but best to ensure you have a mix of cream and white together. For example use a few striped white and cream fabrics and accessories.
Thanks,
Toni
What white would you recommend for south-facing kitchen shaker cabinets to go with gray and white/gray quartz counters? Don’t want it to be too bright/stark white but also don’t want anything yellowy. I like BM decorators white, but in some lights it looks a little too blue. Thanks!
Hi There,
My go to true white is BM Chantilly Lace. No blue or yellow undertones.
Thanks,
Toni
Thank you! I tried the Chantilly Lace and I like it a lot, I’m just afraid it might be a bit too bright. If I wanted to tone the brightness down just a little bit is there another white you could suggest while still avoiding blue and yellow undertones? What about Distant Gray or Super White? Thanks so much!
Hi Mary,
Distant gray will look blue and I am not familiar with Super White we don’t have that colour in Canada. I would stick with the Chantilly Lace. It’s a bright white but it’s not cold so won’t feel stark.
Toni
Thank you so much for your help!!
I used the Chantilly White on Toni’s recommendation and LOVE it. It is not too bright at all and blends well with other whites throughout my home.
Exterior question. We are painting the exterior of our house BM Briarwood. We want white trim and have narrowed it down to three; BM Super White, BM Decorators White, or BM Chantilly Lace. thoughts?
Hi Keith,
I would suggest Chantilly Lace or Decorators White. Both would look great.
Toni
Hello, Toni! I am so torn about what color to paint my cabinets. Would you be willing to allow me to send you pictures of my kitchen to get your input? Thank you!
Hi Alexandra,
Happy to do an online consult with you if you want to send pictures. Here is the link to my site http://www.tonischeferdesign.com/online-services/

Hi
I am painting my walls natural wicker, which white color would work better-cotton balls or white dove.
Thanks
Hi Vickie,
I would recommend white dove over cotton balls (can have a yellow undertone).
Hope this helps.
Toni’
Hi Toni,
I’m looking to freshen up a 5-year old living-dining space reno with some new white walls. I live in Toronto in an Edwardian semi-detached. Our floors are fumed oak (not stained – waxed finish with deep chocolate tones), we have exposed muted rusty-red brick on one wall that goes up through the second floor landing, and have used calacatta marble in the fireplace surround. Currently the walls in the space are Ben Moore Pale Oak, with Cloud White on trim and millwork throughout the house, including the fireplace mantle. Our style is “transitional” but I’ve lately been moving towards a preference for more modern. Which white would you recommend for walls and trim (both same colour in different finishes). I was considering Simply White but I’ve read a few comments about it looking too warm, which I’d want to avoid with the marble elements. I already think Cloud White is too warm, I’ve just been living with it. But I don’t want stark/cold either as we have the warm brick and wood elements. Oxford White? Is that too grey? Our living/dining area is oriented north to south with a south-facing with a bay window and glass entry door at the south end, and some light filters in from the kitchen at the north end of the floor – but it’s not a bright space. Thanks in advance!
Hi Nathalie,
I would suggest BM Chantilly Lace or BM Snow White (cooler out of the two). Either one of these will give you a more modern fresh look without the warmth. Oxford white can look dirty so I would avoid that colour.
Happy painting!
Toni
Thank you for the reply! I didn’t get a notification, but a friend of mine (Gillian who commented below) found this page on her own quest for a wall white and told me she noticed my name in the comments! Ain’t it a small world!
I’m going to paint a big test board in Chantilly Lace, but I hadn’t considered Decorators White until now. Do you think that would be a good option as well? Or am I overcomplicating my choices? I’d post a photo of my current living room but I don’t think I can in a reply…
Hi Nathalie,
Try them both in your space and see which one you like the best and keep it simple. Go with your first gut instinct.
Good luck,
Toni
Hi Toni,
A little behind the eight ball, and kinda forced into getting my cabinets in Snow White. Couple of questions.
1. Do you think that it is too warm a color to pair with white subway tiles?
2. Would you recommend that I also paint my walls the same white? Originally I was considering Decorator’s White or Simply White for the walls and trim (walls in eggshell, ceiling in matte, trim in semi-gloss).
Kitchen counters will be Ceaserstone 5110 Alpine Mist, kitchen island will be , and floors are oak in medium brown.
Hi Debbie,
Snow White is not a warm white at all it’s quite the opposite. I would paint your walls in the same colour or else Decorator’s White.
Toni
Hello,
This is such a wonderful article and your responses to the comments are so lovely and helpful.
I am currently finalizing my colour selection and am leaning towards Decorators White on both the walls and trim as the main colour in our house (open concept so all of the main floor and the stairwells and upstairs hallway). Our Kitchen cabinets are Stonington Gray, our counters are Caesarstone Organic White and our floors are a medium brown red oak. The house faces east, so we get some morning light and then afternoon light coming in the back windows (we live in Toronto though so are north), we have non north facing window and one south facing that gets no light as it faces our neighbours.
I like Decorators White because I feel the slight grey undertone works with the Stonington Gray but just want to make sure that using it on the walls and trim won’t be too stark or cool. (I know you trend towards Chantilly Lace but I think it is too white for us and my painter has advised me we’d need extra coats with it).
Thanks so much 🙂
Gillian
Hi Gillian,
Decorators white will look lovely and especially if it’s all the same throughout and it will go nicely with the kitchen cabinets and the floors will keep things warm.
Would love you to send a picture once it’s all done.
Thanks,
Toni
Thank you so much, I’m going to go with it! Painting starts this Monday and I will definitely send you a picture!! I’m very excited 🙂
