In the business of renovation or new construction a good general contractor is worth their weight in gold. They are the key to a successful project weather its a simple renovation or new home build. I have recently had a few clients that I have worked with that have not had such great experiences and it just breaks my heart. (which is what prompted me to write this post)

Renovating or building a home is so stressful and you need someone that you trust and has your best interest at heart. Yes we all want to save money in the end but unless you have lots of experience in renovating and know your own trades, hiring a general contractor to manage your project is money well spent. A good contractor will have skilled trades they work with on a regular basis because they trust them and know they do a good job.

Reputation is everything so ask for references and follow up on them. If you have no idea where to start look on Houzz. This is a great site to find a local professional from general contractors, designers, painters etc. and you can see their references and check out projects they have worked on. It’s also a great site to get ideas for design.

Follow your gut also and if you feel like something isn’t right then question it. You are the home owner.
